In 2004, Egersund was voted as Santa's hometown in Norway. At the same time, and independently of this vote, a handful Egersunders were checking the possibilities for making a Christmas town in Egersund.
When NRK listeners voted Egersund as Norway's Christmas town, and Santa's hometown, the work had already begun on making a Christmas market. Being voted Santa's hometown was a bonus for the initiators, who were inspiration to create something very special for the Christmas town.
On December 8th 2004, the town square in Egersund was transformed into a wonderful and charming little Christmas town, with stalls full of food, textiles, mulled claret , art, Christmas decorations, and much more. The people of Egersund were proud, and the people who visited from out of town were mighty impressed. The Egersund Christmas Town was back in 2005 with a, if possible, even better Christmas marked.
The Egersund Christmas Town has become a tradition and a concept far beyond the county of Rogaland. The credit for this is not on a single person but a whole town´s desire to create something special and different before Christmas. The Christmas Town is the two first weekends in December every year.
